IP-Dedicated subsidies for SMEs and individual entrepreneurs in the Brussels Region

Driven by the constant will to foster economic regional development, the Brussels Region created different financial grants for Small and Medium Enterprises. Among these SME financing programs, some may be leveraged by Brussels SMEs to get specific advises related to their activity. As IP strategies and all related questions play a substantive role in the strategic development of an SME, some of these subsidies may cover, under certain conditions, specific services related to Intellectual Property:

Patent drafting/filing and prosecution ('PROTECT')

This financial support to SMEs, managed by Innoviris (the Brussels Institute for Research and Innovation), provides a coverage of the costs for obtaining and validating patents coming out of R&D projects, whether they are financed by the Region or not (max intervention period of 3 years).

In order to benefit from this financial aid, the Brussels SME must develop all or some of its activities within the territory covered by the Brussels-Capital Region.

The rates of financial intervention in these expenses will vary depending on the size of the company, the maturity of the R&D project and the framework of the project:

The application follows on from a project financed by Innoviris The application does not follow on from a project financed by Innoviris
  Industrial research (R) Experimental development (D) R or D
Micro enterprise/Small enterprise 70% 45% 45%
Medium entreprises 60% 35% 35%

The basic rate may be increased by 15% when the research from which the results come is carried out in cooperation with a research organisation. The rate of intervention is anyhow limited to 80%.
