Duration

Both Benelux and registered Community designs have a validity of five years, which is renewable for four successive periods of five years.

Unregistered Community designs, on the other hand, are protected for three years, starting from first divulgation to the public, which must take place within the European Union.

The duration of protection for international designs is governed by the relevant laws of countries covered by the registration and can differ from country to country.
